Very interesting thoughts. I agree that our kids see us live a double standard in a lot of different situations. I pondered a couple of years ago about the drinking/alcohol issue for young people. I watched as parents spend lots of money and time drinking and partying and then tell their young family members that they can't drink. Yes, it's the law but what about modeling behavior for them. I'm not totally against drinking, I rather enjoy a good glass or two of wine and there are a few drinks that I enjoy. But drinking isn't my life and it isn't a right of passage for our young people! As I shared this opinion, I received (as you can imagine) lots of different thoughts from adults.

Equally, I read a facebook post just this morning where I know the person was trying to give encouragement, "do what makes you happy." When did happiness become the all determining factor for what to do in our lives. When did we lose the ability to "do undo" others. Perhaps when we start teaching our children that doing what's right is more important than doing what makes us happy, we'll all start to live a more fulfilled live. One in which we enjoy today's blessings and can celebrate the other person's success!

Thanks for sharing such a difficult but necessary sentiment!!

Equally, I read a facebook post just this morning where I know the person was trying to give encouragement, “do what makes you happy.” When did happiness become the all determining factor for what to do in our lives.
Shaun - Amen! As a mom of a high school student, I couldn't agree more. It's not easy today to raise children. These are challenging times and we've created some of the challenges ourselves - by being so busy that we don't always take the opportunities to reach out to our children. I'm also a mom of an athlete and we often times take a lot of criticism for how much money and time athletics cost. But for our familly, it creates a bond that may not be there otherwise. We attend every game and sporting event and have a fairly good handle on who our son spends time with after school or after a game. Plus it adds another layer of accountability for our son - the coaching staff. Some coaches do a fabulous job of keeping track of their athletes by txt and special meetings.

As former President Clinton once said, "it takes an community to raise a child." Let's hope the community is paying attention!

I totally agree with you Angioplasty, it is very very sad1 I can remember some very talented athletes that I played with who got so burnt out, they just up and quit. If their parents/coaches weren't as hard on them, who knows they could still be playing professionally. I hate to see the pressure these young athletes endure when it should be about developing skills and having fun!

All too often you see this and it's really quite sad. I know of a few of my friends' friends kids who are pushed very hard to be very good at a particular sport for each of them. Personally it looks like it makes the life of the parents hellish from running around like crazy trying to get Jimmy to baseball Johnny to basketball and Timmy to soccer. They're killing the fun part of life, being a kid!

I just wrote an article for Tee Times Press on Junior Golf and just touched on some things you mention in your article. Love Tiger's quote...that theme was woven into my article! Love what you are doing and the eternal impact you are having!
