3 C Power

7 02 2017

stencil-youtube-thumbnailLike many, I am fascinated with the formula for SUCCESS. I realize that success has different meanings depending on the source. However, for the sake of this piece I am simply looking to understand a formula for living with purpose, resulting in something being produced, fueled by passion, and challenges our potential.

Simply stated, success might be be defined as living purposely to produce an outcome motivated by passion to realize our potential.

Isn’t this why we pour hours of energy into a sport, career, relationship, hobby?

Are we not truly desiring to have purpose and intention in our living?

Do we not want to see results from our efforts in the form of some outcome?

Are we not trying to live with passion and motivation so we can sustain ourselves through the challenging times?

Are we not also curious about what we are capable of and truly seek to tap into the deep potential that lives often latently in the depths of our being?

I want to suggest that there are 3 C’s that can propel us to this end.

First, is COURAGE. I really believe that removing unfounded fear and living courageously is at the center of fulfillment, purpose and achievement. Regardless of what you are striving for at some point courage will be necessary. Whether we are looking to improve a relationship, performance at a job, improve our grades in school, or let go of a dream to cultivate a new one, COURAGE IS PART OF THE SUCCESS FORMULA.

Second, CHALLENGE. Challenge is like the weight room of life. It is here where you face your limitations and train past them. When you are engaged in a well grounded strength training program limits and resistance are used to grow strength and endurance. Aren’t we all looking for strength and endurance in our lives? We MUST EMBRACE THE CHALLENGES IN OUR LIVES!! When we do so with wisdom these challenges can be transformed into strength and endurance. Success is often achieved through the expression of strength and endurance as seen in commitment and persistence.

Third, CONTENTMENT. This one will most certainly come as a shock to many. In this ELITISM SOCIETY where being EXCEPTIONAL is often looked at as the norm, NORMAL HAS NOW BECOME SEEN AS DEFECTIVE. Success for most of us will reside in living with a healthy contentment knowing that we did the best we could have. There is nothing wrong with being content with your best even if your best was at the low end of the norm. I see many knocking themselves out to pursue exceptional and elite status at the expense of their own well being with no real hope of ever reaching exceptional status. I have to thank my mentor, Micheal Anderson L.P. and co-author of the book GIST The Essence of Raising Life-Ready Kids, for this concept.

COURAGE, CHALLENGE and CONTENTMENT. 3 C’s that provide a framework for us to intentionally live with purpose and deep fulfillment as we navigate through the many experiences that we will encounter in life. I urge you to take these 3 C’s and activate them in your life.

Let us know your definition of success in the comments below!

Committing to Commitment

29 06 2016
DO YOU FIND YOURSELF CONSTANTLY WAITING FOR SOMETHING BETTER TO COME UP?
DO YOU SEEM TO KEEP REPEATING THE SAME CHALLENGES IN YOUR LIFE?
stencil.youtube-thumbnail
DO YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT TO GIVE OF YOURSELF COMPLETELY TO A PURSUIT OR PERSON?
DO YOU GET FRUSTRATED THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU CAN TRUST?

If these are some of your experiences then this blog might give you a new perspective to create change and movement.

At first sight you may look at the title of today’s writing and have to spend a couple seconds thinking about it. However, I wrote the title purposely. I want to have a look at commitment and challenge you to re-think how you see this rich and vital concept.

I think it is safe to say that we are in the FOMO generation (Fear Of Missing Out). I hear with consistency the phrase, “I do not want to commit to ________; something better might come up that I do not want to miss out on.” I believe the effects of this mindset are destroying the quality of our relationships, work and sport. We have become obsessed, controlled by and addicted to the possibility of spontaneous euphoria.

I believe that we are paying a HUGE price with the FOMO framework. It may not be a surprise to hear that the riches and deeply impactful life experiences that lead to fulfillment, long standing joy, confidence, and self-definition are born from being FULLY INVESTED, IMMERSED and COMMITTED for the long haul.

How do we ever do more than simply troll above the surface of existence if we live for what “might come up?”

I am concerned that we will struggle to build teams, social work cultures and families if we do not start COMMITTING TO COMMITMENT. The psychological safety required to work fully self expressed and together in teams has been identified as a KEY FACTOR in propelling teams to play at high levels; often out performing “A” players living with different group dynamics. When people committing to one another appears to be a thing of the past, it is no wonder why so many are afraid of rejection, hurt, isolation, to name a few. The results are people playing small, scared and without creativity and joy.

If we want to touch the rim of EXCELLENCE, FULFILLMENT, DEEP JOY, MASTERY,

AND UNSHAKABLE CONFIDENCE I believe we need to COMMIT TO COMMITMENT.

Living life eventually brings us to many cross roads. In sports the competition will eventually show us our lack of mastery, in business we will most definitely hit our lid, in relationships we will for sure hit a point of struggle. No matter what the arena we will be exposed and this is a good thing. It is at this point we can decide about GROWING or LEAVING. Growth requires COMMITMENT and leaving will often result in us returning to the same cross road facing the same decision again. (there are most certainly times when it is the right thing to move on).

I want to respectfully challenge you to put COMMITTING to COMMITMENT as your strategy for growth and life fulfillment. Doing so compels you to fully invest yourself, immerse yourself, and be diligent in your pursuit of those things that you bring your best to AND you also become your best through.

Let’s terminate the FOMO framework and realize that there are pursuits, passions and people that deserve and require us to COMMIT to in order for the good stuff to come forth.

Let me know in the comments below what you are going to commit to today.

Habits of Excellence

22 06 2016

stencil.twitter-postWe would all like to believe that we are in CHARGE of or CONTROL our lives. Fundamentally we do make choices with our behaviors and thoughts day to day. However, the shocking truth is that we are all CREATURES OF HABIT. It is these habits, or repetitive behaviors, that end up determining the quality of our lives.

Over the years I have become more aware of the connection between the quality of my life and my habits. In other words I have been struck by how much I get what I have earned. For example, in relationships I have had a habit of talking more than I am listening. This came to my awareness as I was talking with my son one day. I went into the conversation with a desire to learn about his level of interest in his upcoming college experience and realized as I was driving to my next appointment that I had actually learned nothing. This was not because he was unwilling to share, it was because I didn’t listen. I have work projects that I have authentic excitement about that were spawned 6 months ago. Yet some of these have not yet even gotten off the ground. These are just a few examples of how habits can lie under the surface of awareness but do their destructive work regardless of my intention.

I think it is imperative that we step back and give some thought to our lives with the intention to gain clarity about where we are relinquishing power to automatic and repetitive behaviors that road block our deepest desires and ambitions. We need to ask ourselves, “What habits do I need to re-invent and what skills do I need to upgrade to significantly upgrade the quality of my life?” Doing this allows our focus and awareness to uncover the unconscious automatic actions and attitudes that are most likely silently destroying things we care about.

From this reflection we need to then build HABITS OF EXCELLENCE. These are habits that lead to the elevated capacity to build relationships filled with understanding, love, experiential impact, work production that is heightened, stress that is lowered, health that is enhanced, and an overall life quality that is elevated all because some habits of excellence were implemented, reinforced and strengthened through consistency.

I believe many of us are blindly and unconsciously going through our lives without the awareness that a much better quality of life is simply a few habits of excellence away. Take some time today and do a thorough walk through of your life and identify at least one habit that is having an undesirable impact on your life. Once you have done that invent a new habit that can lead you to experience a better quality of life.

Generating Purpose that Motivates

8 06 2016

purpose blogDiscovering purpose can be very challenging. This might be because we have a predetermined idea of what it means to have a purpose by generating an image of a hero like Martin Luther King, Gandhi or someone we have come to admire because of the mark they have made on the world and our lives. These people certainly lived with a purpose that drove them to commit their lives to their message.

For the sake of this article I would like to suggest that we can create many multiple applications of purpose. It doesn’t have to be an all-encompassing, immersive, commitment-rich passion we invest our entire lives in (although it could). What I am referring to is living each day and moment with an intention to BE PURPOSEFUL.

In other words, FULL OF PURPOSE.

This can be anything from meeting the challenges of our day believing that we will grow strength, resilience and a deep sense of confidence by doing so, or intentionally engaging in our routine tasks and responsibilities with a purpose we generate in the moment.

My point is that the power of purpose is not reserved only for the world’s leaders.

Living with daily intention and purpose is for ALL OF US regardless of what we are doing.

I LEARNED THIS POWERFULLY while I was in college. My freshman year my first day of class I met KEITH. Keith was the building maintenance manager (we referred to him as the janitor in my day). He made my day that first morning while cleaning a bathroom. He smiled at me and said, “God has big things in store for you. This is the first day of you uncovering what that looks like. Have a great day, Shaun”. He got to know hundreds of students by name. This encounter with a purpose-filled man has not been lost on me for over 30 years. In fact, I went to hours and hours of classes and cannot remember anything that rivals that strong of a memory.

Unfortunately, I believe that many live daily with little to no purpose because they are waiting for purpose to come upon them rather than committing to LIVE PURPOSELY and create it in the moment. The PURPOSE THAT MOTIVATES is the purpose that means something to you! That day 30 years ago Keith lived with purpose by deciding to make a difference in the life of a scared, unsure and overwhelmed freshman. Not only did he live this way that day but every time I witnessed him working I saw him do the same thing with other students all four years I was there. I came to realize later he had lived that way for 25 years.

Take the time each day to live in a manner that matters to you!

This is the secret to the purpose that motivates.

Take it from me I will forever be grateful for KEITH and his purposeful living.

Dealing with Doubt

12 05 2016

Have you ever been getting ready to do something that you have prepared for only to find yourself overwhelmed with doubt? It could be a test you have studied for, a game you have marked on your calendar as significant, a tryout that will determine your next opportunity, or a meeting you have coming up that might open some doors for you.

These types of situations can all spark doubt.

WE ALL HAVE MOMENTS OF DOUBT.

However, doubt doesn’t have to derail you! In fact, when you experience doubt it is your CUE and SIGNAL to tune into or cultivate a NEW SELF TALK. What is self talk? It is the dialogue we cultivate within ourselves. The nature and coding of this conversation can either fuel us with COURAGE, PEACE, JOY, or DOUBT, DESPAIR, FEAR to name a few.

If we are going to OVERCOME DOUBT we need to speak to ourselves differently, not just once but ALL THE TIME.

Here is an example:

Recently I was preparing to shoot some training videos. Being in front of the camera has often brought about the self talk of “I am not good at this!” or “What right do I have to put something on video?” I end up DOUBTING MYSELF. The more I engage in this internal conversation, the more the doubt intensifies. Up until recently it has paralyzed me from even pursuing videos for the last 5 years.

When I was aware of this self talk I CHANGED it by saying, “I do not have to be perfect at this,” and “I will do my best and see where it takes me.” The more I engaged in that type of self talk the more I began to calm down and let go of the need to have it go a certain way. Doing this allowed me to ENJOY THE CHALLENGE and the LEARNING that the experience brought my direction. The funny thing is that where there was doubt at one point led to PRIDE, ENERGY and CONFIDENCE because of the EXPERIENCE.

I have learned that often my doubt is more about me than about what it is I am doing. I have had many experiences that have gone so much different than I thought they would (for the better). People have been more gracious, generous and accepting than I would have ever imagined.

If you will talk to yourself differently I believe with all my being that you will access COURAGE and ACTION where there has been doubt.

YOU CAN OVERCOME YOUR DOUBT!

The Unsung Hero

22 02 2016

28well-bullycoach-tmagArticleIn the world of sports we have become obsessed with those that hoist trophies, win scoring titles and are the face of the latest Nike or Under Armour commercial. However, I have learned that there is a class of athlete that will most likely go virtually unnoticed, unrecognized and at times even ostracized.  For the sake of confidentiality I will not name the athlete(s) that I am basing this article on, but the inspiration for this article comes from an actual series of true stories.

I am writing to give these athletes respect and a voice.

The season begins with all of the excitement that comes with a new beginning. The off-season training, which requires significant sacrifice, hard work, and focus is now in the books and coaches speak of an “equal playing field” to compete for playing time. Coaches say things like: “IF you work hard you will be given an opportunity to contribute.” Optimism is high because the hard work has resulted in a stronger, more explosive body as well as, a  set of refined skills. However, what will transpire over the following months is nothing less then devastating!!

The season begins and over time the favoritism  becomes obvious as the pecking order is already well established. Entitlement and privilege under girds the environment while players without scholarships, draft status or a powerful enough network are given messages that if evaluated outside of the sport would be nothing short of abusive. Many coaches send verbal and non-verbal messages that  show very little respect for the heart, soul and mind of these athletes that have given their all in pursuit of their dream.

Yet these UNSUNG HEROES continue to pursue their dream with vigilance, passion, focus, and belief without even a taste of humanity from the coaches that espouse being in the sport to develop young people, a community of connection and long-term skills for success.

What keeps these athletes going?

HEART. STRENGTH. COMMITMENT. DETERMINATION. BELIEF. PRIDE.

These are UNSUNG HEROES!!! I cannot think of anything that is more WORTHY of our respect and honor than recognizing the many young men and women that have the courage to pursue their dream with this kind of vigilance and courage.

This is what champions of LIFE are made of!

To those that fit the criteria listed in this article I say, “You are worthy of the highest of awards. THE UNSUNG HERO award. I hope each of you has a person highlighting these amazing qualities in you and honoring you for the character and determination that is nothing short of amazing!!! My everlasting respect goes with you!!”

The world of sports is filled with great mentors and coaches.

However, if you are a coach that is treating those you are privileged to coach with anything less than the respect you would give to your own children, then please get out of the sport!!!

We owe it to those that are giving their all to apply the best practices of coaching in their pursuit and ours.

Hard Work is Over Rated

4 06 2015

Screen Shot 2015-06-04 at 9.30.45 PMYou may have looked at the title of this blog and wondered, who is this crazy person that thinks success can come in any other way but through HARD WORK. I am not here to deny or debate the value of hard work. However, what I do want to highlight is that it takes a lot more than HARD WORK to experience and enjoy success. In fact, the work part of success is in my mind the lowest common denominator.  This topic is important to me because, (over the years and thousands of athlete interviews later) I believe we have taken the concept of hard work and exhausted its effectiveness. Go to any sporting event where young people are participating and someone: a coach, a parent, or now even other players will speak about the importance of work ethic and instead of the message coming from a place of inspiration, passion, and deeply held motivation and purpose it is almost a form of punishment and condemnation. It sounds like this: “Lets make sure we come with our lunch pale and outwork the other team.” When interviewed, many coaches start with talking about work ethic as though this is always the differentiating dynamic in wins and losses. In other venues, school, work, and relationships we bring the same focus to HARD WORK.

Like I said I am not in any way denying that work ethic isn’t valuable and a powerful contributor to success in all arenas of life. But, is it possible that we are losing some other very important SUCCESS FACTORS because we have obsessed with work ethic for SO LONG?

It would be fair to ask the question: What are some other important SUCCESS PRINCIPLES we should speak of instead?

Strategy: Energy without a plan or set of principles to focus that energy leaves many frustrated and without any capacity to evaluate and most importantly learn. When we highlight HARD WORK we often spend little to no time teaching the value of how to DIRECT and FOCUS that hard work to get a certain result. This is why when I ask athletes participating across multiple sports, “what is the key to success?”, often the only answer is WORK HARD. When people bring great work ethic to a challenge or competition with a substandard or non-existent strategy losing, disappointment, deep doubt, and discouragement are not far away.

Contribution Clarity: We all have more to offer a situation then simply going “ALL OUT.” When faced with challenges this is where we should be looking for our UNIQUE CONTRIBUTION. In other words, what was I able to CONTRIBUTE that is CLEAR to me! Often times we de-personalize contribution by putting it into the HARD WORK category. When athletes know what their teammates and coaches are counting on from them within a strategy designed to bring success, engagement and motivation is often higher. Success can then be shared at much deeper levels.

Adjustments: When studying those that are often consistently successful, what we learn is that adjustments are often a big part of this. Breaking down the nature of adjustments we realize that in order to make a helpful adjustment you need to start with a strategy, clarify roles and expectations, then observe how things are playing out to determine an adjustment that increases the probability of success. Unfortunately, most of the time the approach is not to make adjustments but WORK HARDER!! This often leads to greater frustration, discouragement, and a feeling of hopelessness.

Strategy, Clear Contribution Markers and Adjustments created from observation are not only powerful success factors but can be applied to any situation in life. Because of our obsession with HARK WORK we are not teaching our young people to add these valuable principles to their skill sets and because of this I believe we are not as successful as we could be individually and as teams.

Lets break our addiction to HARD WORK as the end all of success and get creative and committed to applying these other success principles. We might find that HARD WORK may actually increase within the growth of these other principles.
